Village Academy Schools was founded under the Learning Unlimited International Schools system in the fall of 1976 as a year-round preschool and kindergarten. The original campus was established adjacent to the Ohio State University. Over the next thirty years, the program expanded to become an independent preparatory school for students in grades preschool through twelve. In 2006, the school was re-branded simply as Village Academy Schools which consists of Village Academy (k-12) and Village Junior Academy (Preschool & Young Kindergarten). Village Academy was voted the #1 Private School in Central Ohio in the 2010 SNP Reader's Choice Awards[3] .
In the fall of 1990, the first phase of a 7-acre (28,000 m2) campus, Village Academy, opened in Powell, Ohio. Over the course of the last decade, Village Academy has emerged as one of the strongest private, independent school systems in northwest Columbus and within the Columbus metropolitan area.
Athletic opportunities are both varied and numerous at Village Academy. Participation in sports and physical education is an integral part of the curriculum. The athletic teams are composed of students with a wide range of abilities, enabling the developing athlete, as well as the skilled athlete, to compete side by side. Village Academy is a member of the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association). Both individual and team sports are offered, including: soccer, tennnis, basketball, pickle ball, volleyball, golf, cheerleading, track and field, and cross country. Athletic programs are available for lower, middle and upper school students. Village Academy's mascot is the Griffin.
A variety of extracurricular opportunities are available for students at Village Academy.
Lower School Activities: Lower School students may choose "after school specials" such as chess, cookery, art, hands-on science, computer skills, dance, yoga, cheer leading and theater. Children are introduced to many of life's experience which cannot be brought into the classroom. Historically, end of the year activities for lower school include trips to the Newport Aquarium and Camp Mary Orton. All lower school students also participate in a winter musical, a spring production, and other activities such as the science and language fairs, spelling, math and geography bees.
Middle and Upper School Activities: Middle and Upper school students enjoy a wealth of opportunities for social gatherings, dances, and club activities as well as trips to theater events, museum exhibitions and musical concerts. Eighth grade students travel to Washington D.C. and seniors plan a trip abroad or to interesting and educational destinations in the U.S. Overnight trips to adventure camps, physics days at local amusement parks, laboratory research at Stone Lab on Lake Erie are just a few of the exciting opportunities awaiting students.
Middle School students also participate in geography bees, spelling bees, and vocabulary bees.
The newest addition to the Village Academy facility is the recently built Arts Conservatory. The Arts Conservatory, a 12-square-foot (1.1 m2) structure, opened in 2000 and incorporates antique barn-like features that represent the architectural history of Powell, Ohio. The floor plan included rehearsal areas for instrumental and vocal music programs, as well as four individual practice rooms. The Arts Conservatory allows students to master their skills in a variety of areas including: performing and visual art, and media technology by providing dance, drama, and recording studios, sound-proofed practice rooms, an art gallery, a black box theater, an art studio complete with kiln room, a black room, a graphics arts lab and a woodshed.
The Village Academy Jazz Band has performed with Arnett Howard, Mark Frye, Gene Walker, and Lee Savory, in addition to a number of performances at several locations in both Ohio and Florida.
The Village Academy drama department has also been recognized for a number of its productions including: Wizard of Oz, Julius Caesar, Oliver!, The Foreigner, You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, Cinderella, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and The Crucible.
